How to Choose a Glass Sandblasting Machine

Most buying guides for this equipment are written by people who have never run a glass shop. They list features. They do not tell you which decisions are expensive to get wrong.

This one is organised around the five questions that actually determine whether a machine fits your shop — and the order matters, because answering them out of order is how people end up with equipment that technically works but does not fit how they produce.

1. What are you actually making?

Sandblasting glass covers two very different jobs, and machines are built around one or the other.

  • Full-surface frosting — the whole panel is blasted to an even matte finish. Shower glass, partitions, privacy panels. The machine’s job is uniformity across a large area.
  • Partial or patterned blasting — a masking film stencil protects part of the surface, so only the exposed areas frost. Logos, decorative patterns, borders, signage. The machine’s job is consistent depth without undercutting the mask.

Machines built for production frosting handle both, but the second job also requires a film-cutting workflow upstream: a plotter to cut the stencil and masking film that survives the blast. If patterned work is more than an occasional request, budget for that whole chain, not just the blaster.

A common and expensive mistake: buying a blasting machine for decorative work without costing out the film and cutting side of it. The blaster is often the cheaper half of that workflow.

2. How does glass move through your shop?

This is the question that decides vertical versus horizontal, and it is decided by your existing floor, not by machine specs.

If your team already handles panels upright on A-frames and racks, a vertical machine drops into that flow. Nobody has to lay glass down and pick it back up. It also takes far less floor area than a horizontal line of comparable capacity — usually the deciding factor for shops in leased industrial space.

If you already have flatbed handling — laminating tables, flat conveyors, CNC tables — a horizontal machine keeps the glass in the orientation the rest of your equipment expects. Horizontal handling is also easier on very thin or very large panels that flex.

3. What is your largest panel — and your smallest?

Buyers reliably check the maximum. They forget the minimum, and then discover their machine cannot process small pieces because the conveyor cannot grip them.

Working width on our vertical range runs from about 1500 mm to 2500 mm depending on model. Minimum workable size is around 200 x 500 mm. Horizontal models run from AD1200 up to AD3100. Glass thickness in the common range is 3 to 28 mm, with some configurations handling thicker flat glass.

Two practical notes:

  • Size the machine to the panel you produce regularly, not the one you made once for a difficult customer. Oversizing costs floor space, abrasive, and air compressor capacity every single day.
  • Then add margin. A machine at exactly your maximum panel size leaves no room for the job you have not won yet.

4. What volume are you running?

Reference productivity on a vertical machine is roughly 25 m²/h, but that figure moves substantially with pattern complexity, abrasive choice, and how the operator has set up pressure and travel speed. Treat it as a planning number, not a guarantee.

The more useful exercise is working backwards. Take your realistic monthly square metres, divide by working hours, and see whether one machine covers it with room to spare. If you land at 90% of rated capacity, you have not bought spare capacity — you have bought a bottleneck that fails the first time a rush order arrives.

5. What is your compressed air situation?

This is the single most under-planned item in the entire purchase, and it causes more disappointed first months than any other factor.

These machines run at 0.6 to 0.8 MPa (roughly 87 to 116 psi) and consume air continuously while blasting. An undersized compressor produces pressure that sags mid-cycle, which shows up as visible banding and uneven frost on the finished panel. People blame the machine. It is almost always the air.

Before you commit to a machine, tell your supplier your compressor’s output and tank size and ask them to confirm it is adequate for the model. If it is not, the compressor upgrade belongs in your budget from day one — not as a surprise three weeks after the machine lands.

The things that are easy to overlook

Dust collection

Blasting glass produces fine dust. You need collection sized for the machine, and you need to plan where the collected dust goes. In the United States, check your local air-quality and workplace rules before installation, not after.

Abrasive recycling

Production shops recycle abrasive — that is what makes the cost per panel reasonable. Brown fused alumina fractures into fresh cutting edges as it breaks down, which is why it dominates production frosting. Garnet runs lower dust and gives a different surface character. Whichever you choose, the recovery and separation system is part of the machine decision, not an accessory.

Wear parts

Nozzles, seals, and belts wear. Ask specifically which parts are consumable, how often they are replaced, and whether they are proprietary or industrial standard components. On our machines they are industrial standard, which means you can source them locally instead of waiting on a shipment. That distinction matters enormously when a part fails on a Friday.

Who supports it after installation

A machine imported with no support relationship is a machine you own alone. Ask what the warranty actually covers, for how long, and what happens when something fails.
