Sandblast Resist Film Thickness Guide

Masking film thickness is a balance between two opposing demands: thin film cuts and weeds better, thick film survives longer under the blast. Getting it wrong shows up as either ragged pattern edges or a stencil that fails mid-panel.

This guide covers the five thicknesses available, what each is suited to, and how to specify what you need.

The five thicknesses

Important on how thickness is measured: these figures are the PVC face plus dried adhesive, excluding the release liner. Suppliers do not all measure the same way, and a film quoted with the liner included will read thicker than it performs. If you are comparing against another supplier, confirm which basis their number uses before assuming two products are equivalent.

The trade-off in both directions

Thinner film

  • Cuts more cleanly on the plotter, especially on fine line work and small text
  • Weeds more easily — small internal shapes lift out without tearing
  • Conforms better to slight surface irregularities
  • Less material between the abrasive stream and the glass, so less protection under long or aggressive blasting

Thicker film

  • More body under the blast, so it holds up through longer cycles and coarser media
  • More resistant to edge lift on large open blast areas
  • Harder to weed on intricate patterns — small shapes resist lifting and can tear
  • Blade needs to work harder; fine detail is less crisp

The most common mistake is choosing thickness by “safer is thicker.” A film too heavy for your pattern costs you at the weeding table on every single panel, which is usually the most labour-intensive step in the whole workflow.

How to choose: work from your pattern and your blast

Two questions decide it.

1. How fine is your detail?

Look at the smallest feature in your typical artwork — the thinnest line, the smallest counter in a letterform, the tightest internal shape. If your work routinely includes small internal shapes and thin lines, thinner film will save you real time in weeding and give sharper edges.

If your work is mostly large open shapes, borders, and blocks of frosting, detail is not the constraint and you can go heavier.

2. How long and how aggressive is your blast?

A short blast with fine media asks very little of the mask. A long blast with coarse media asks a lot. Reference points: our machines run at 0.6–0.8 MPa, and grit size ranges from 24# to 120#.

Deep carving with coarse abrasive is the case that pushes you toward the heavier grades. Light architectural frosting with fine media does not.

This is a starting point for selection, not a performance guarantee. Blast duration, abrasive grit, working pressure, nozzle distance and glass type all interact, and no supplier can predict the combination running in your shop. Order a sample and run it on your own machine before committing a production quantity.

Why we do not publish blast-resistance test data

You will sometimes see masking film marketed with figures like “withstands X minutes of blasting.” We do not publish numbers like that, and it is worth explaining why.

Such a figure is only meaningful alongside the abrasive grit, working pressure, nozzle type and distance, glass type, and ambient conditions used to produce it. Change any one and the number changes. Presented without that context it looks like a specification and behaves like marketing.

We would rather send you free material to test on your own machine, under your own conditions, than give you a number that might not survive contact with your shop.

Thickness is one of four things that define a roll.

Width should be chosen against your plotter and your typical panel, not simply “as wide as possible.” A wider roll than your plotter can handle is wasted money; a roll narrower than your panels forces seams.

Colour

Yellow and white are the same material in different pigments. Choice is about contrast against your glass and how easily your team can see what has been weeded. Shops working on mirror and dark glass often prefer one over the other purely for visibility at the weeding table. Order both in a sample if you are undecided — it costs you nothing but shipping.

Storage affects performance more than people expect

This is a pressure-sensitive adhesive product and it does not sit still indefinitely.

  • Preferred storage: 18–25 °C
  • Avoid sustained storage above 30 °C
  • Optimum-use period: 8 months
  • Maximum: 12 months

Heat is the enemy. Film stored through a hot summer in an uncooled warehouse can lose adhesive performance well before the calendar says it should. If you are buying in quantity, plan where it will live before it arrives.
