A bubble under sandblast resist is not a cosmetic flaw. Abrasive finds its way underneath, frosts the glass you were protecting, and the panel becomes scrap after you have already invested cutting, weeding and setup time in it.

Why bubbles form
There are only four causes, and knowing which one you have tells you the fix.

Start with the glass, not the film
Most bubbles are decided before the film comes off the roll. Pressure-sensitive adhesive needs a clean, dry, room-temperature surface to wet out properly against.
- Wash the panel thoroughly. Detergent residue is itself a contaminant, so rinse fully.
- Remove any oil or fingerprints. Handling glass with bare hands after cleaning undoes the cleaning.
- Dry completely. Moisture trapped under film shows up as haze and poor adhesion.
- Let the glass reach room temperature. Cold glass in a warm shop condenses moisture you cannot see.
- Inspect against the light before applying. It is far cheaper to re-clean than to re-do.
If you get bubbles in roughly the same places on panel after panel, the problem is almost never the film. It is something in your cleaning or handling routine putting contamination in the same place each time.
Machine lamination — the reliable answer
A flatbed laminating machine feeds the glass and film through under even, controlled pressure across the full width. It removes the two biggest variables — human pressure consistency and the angle at which the film meets the glass.
Points that still matter with a machine:
- Set roller pressure appropriately. Too little leaves air; too much can stretch the film.
- Feed squarely. A panel entering at an angle produces tension across the sheet.
- Do not let the film pull off the roll under tension — it will relax after application and lift at the edges.
- Keep rollers clean. Debris on a roller presses a defect into every panel that passes.
Models handle up to 850, 1240, 1830 or 2200 mm width, glass to 25 mm thick, at up to 6 m/min. Sizing the laminator to your glass matters — a laminator narrower than your panels forces you back to hand application on exactly the pieces where it is hardest.
Hand application, done properly
For small panels or a shop not yet equipped, hand application can work. It requires method rather than force.
The hinge method
- Position the film over the glass and align it before removing any liner.
- Tape one edge down to create a hinge. This holds registration while you work.
- Fold the film back and peel the release liner from that half only.
- Lay the film down from the hinge outward, using a squeegee at a shallow angle in overlapping strokes.
- Work from the centre toward the edges — always pushing air out, never trapping it ahead of the squeegee.
- Remove the tape, fold back the other half, peel the remaining liner, and repeat.
Squeegee technique
- Shallow angle, firm even pressure, overlapping strokes
- Never stop mid-stroke and restart — that is where a line of trapped air forms
- Do not stretch the film to make it fit. Film under tension will relax and lift later.
- Work the edges last and press them down hard
Thinner film conforms more easily and is more forgiving during hand application. Heavier grades resist and are harder to lay flat by hand — see the thickness guide.
Fixing bubbles you already have
Small bubbles can sometimes be rescued. Large ones usually cannot, and it is worth being realistic rather than hopeful.

Whatever you do, re-press the area firmly afterwards and check it again before blasting.
Edges are where failures actually start
Bubbles get the attention, but lifted edges cause more scrap. Abrasive at 0.6–0.8 MPa will find any edge that is not fully adhered and travel under it.
- Press every edge of every weeded shape firmly before blasting
- Pay particular attention to the edges of small internal shapes and thin lines
- Check edges again immediately before the panel goes into the machine
- If an edge will not stay down, it is telling you about contamination or film age
Film that has been stored badly will not behave
Adhesive performance degrades with heat and time. Film that has sat through a hot summer in an uncooled space can be difficult to apply cleanly no matter how good your technique is.
- Preferred storage: 18–25 °C
- Avoid sustained storage above 30 °C
- Optimum-use period: 8 months
- Maximum: 12 months
If application has suddenly become difficult with no change in method, check the age and storage history of the roll before you blame the technique.
