This is the production process — how a commercial glass shop turns a plain panel into frosted or patterned glass. It is not a hobby guide, and it assumes you have or are considering proper equipment rather than a small cabinet.
The whole job is eight steps. Most of the quality is decided in steps 2 to 4, before any abrasive touches the glass.
What sandblasting actually does to glass
Abrasive driven at pressure fractures the surface of the glass into a fine, irregular texture. That texture scatters light instead of transmitting it cleanly, which is what you see as frost. Nothing is added to the glass — material is removed.
Two consequences follow, and both matter commercially:
- It is permanent. You cannot un-blast a panel. Every mistake is scrap.
- The texture holds dirt. Frosted glass shows fingerprints and marks more than clear glass. Worth telling customers before they discover it in a bathroom.
The eight steps
1. Prepare and inspect the glass
Clean thoroughly and inspect before anything else. Masking film will not adhere properly over dust, oil, or residue, and any lifted edge lets abrasive underneath.
Inspect for chips and edge damage now. Blasting will not hide a defect, and finding it after you have invested the whole process in the panel is expensive.
2. Cut the stencil
For patterned work, the design is cut into masking film on a plotter. Blade depth should cut the film cleanly without scoring through the release liner — a blade set too deep cuts the liner and the film falls apart when you try to handle it.

3. Apply the film
The film is laminated to the glass. This is the step that decides whether the panel survives, and it is the step people most often try to do by hand.
A bubble under the mask is not cosmetic. Abrasive gets underneath it, frosts the glass you were protecting, and the panel is scrap. A flatbed laminating machine applies even pressure across the full sheet, which hand application cannot reliably match on anything large.
Press down the edges of the pattern firmly. Edges are where lifting starts.
4. Weed
Weeding is removing the film from the areas you want frosted, leaving the mask over the areas you want clear.
- Work over a light table if you have one — backlighting shows what has and has not been removed
- Start from a corner of each shape and lift at a shallow angle
- Check small internal shapes specifically. A counter left in a letter is the classic error, and it is invisible until after blasting.
- Re-press the edges of everything you weeded before moving on
Weeding is usually the most labour-intensive step in the whole workflow. If it is taking your team a long time, the cause is often film that is thicker than your pattern needs.
5. Set up the machine
Load the abrasive, confirm your settings, and check the air supply before the panel goes in.
- Grit size — determines texture scale
- Working pressure — our machines run 0.6–0.8 MPa
- Travel speed — determines exposure time
- Nozzle condition and distance
Run these to a written standard for the product rather than by operator judgement. See air pressure and nozzle settings for how to establish that standard.
6. Test panel
Blast a test piece with the same glass, same film, same settings. Assess it under the lighting the customer will see it in, not shop lighting — frosted glass looks noticeably different under warm domestic light than under shop fluorescents.
This step feels like a delay on a busy day. It costs one small piece of glass. Skipping it costs a full panel and a redo.
7. Blast
Load the panel and run. Points that decide the result:
- Keep travel speed and pressure consistent — do not adjust mid-panel
- Watch for the mask lifting at edges; stop if you see it
- On multi-stage work (coarse for depth, fine for surface), complete the whole panel at each stage rather than alternating
- Do not raise pressure to speed up a panel that is running slow. That is how masks fail.
8. Strip, clean, inspect
Remove the film while the panel is still fresh — film that sits on glass for days, especially in heat, becomes harder to remove cleanly.
Wash off abrasive dust and adhesive residue. Frosted texture holds dust, so a proper wash matters more than it does on clear glass.
Inspect against the light at the angle the customer will view it. Look for uneven frost, banding, edge bleed under the mask, and missed weeding.
What goes wrong, and where to look

Safety — this is not optional
Blasting glass produces fine respirable dust. Treat it as a genuine hazard, not a nuisance.
- Proper respiratory protection appropriate to the media and dust generated
- Eye protection and hearing protection
- Working dust collection, sized to the machine
- Ventilation appropriate to the enclosure and material
In the United States, workplace exposure and air-quality rules apply and vary by state and locality. Check what applies to your facility before you install, not after. If you are using any silica-containing media, the requirements are more stringent — this is a reason many shops use alumina or garnet instead.
Where quality actually comes from
New shops focus on the blasting step because it is the dramatic one. In practice, blasting is the most controlled part of the process — the machine does the same thing every time.
The variability lives in cleaning, lamination, and weeding. A shop that gets those three right produces consistent panels on ordinary equipment. A shop that rushes them produces scrap on excellent equipment.
